Barry S. Sternlicht, Chairman


Barry Sternlicht is Chairman of Starwood Energy Group, which he founded in 2005. Mr. Sternlicht is Chairman & Chief Executive Officer of Starwood Capital Group, the private investment firm he formed in 1991 that is focused on global real estate, hotel management, oil and gas, energy infrastructure and securities trading. He also serves as Chairman of Starwood Property Trust, the largest commercial mortgage REIT in the U.S. (NYSE: STWD); Starwood Waypoint Residential Trust (NYSE: SWAY), one of the largest publicly traded investors, owners and operators of single-family homes in the U.S.; TRI Pointe Homes (NYSE: TPH), one of the U.S.’s largest homebuilders; hotel operator Société du Louvre; and crystal maker Baccarat S.A.

For the past 23 years, Mr. Sternlicht has structured investments with an asset value of approximately $55 billion.

From 1995 through early 2005, Mr. Sternlicht was Chairman and CEO of Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide (NYSE: HOT), a company he founded in 1995. During his tenure, he built Starwood Hotels into one of the leading hotel and leisure companies in the world, employing more than 120,000 people with 895 properties in 100 countries. Starwood Hotels is a fully integrated owner, operator and franchiser of hotels. Mr. Sternlicht created W Hotels, perhaps the world’s most successful “boutique” brand, and built the St. Regis Hotels brand from a single hotel to a global brand.

In 2013, Mr. Sternlicht was named the Most Important Person in Commercial Real Estate Finance by The Mortgage Observer. In 2010, Mr. Sternlicht was named Executive of the Year and Investor of the Year by Commercial Property Executive. Mr. Sternlicht was also named America’s Best Lodging CEO by Institutional Investor magazine. He is a member of the Interior Design Magazine Hall of Fame. He has received the Preston Robert Tisch Distinguished Industry Leadership Award from New York University, the CEO Diversity Award from Diversity Best Practices/Business Women’s Network, the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Association of Travel Marketing Executives, the Hospitality Heritage Award from the American Hotel and Lodging Association, and the Marketer of the Year Award from Brandweek. Mr. Sternlicht’s humanitarian efforts have garnered prestigious national honors such as JDRF’s Man of the Year, JDRF’s Living and Giving Award and JDRF’s Chairman’s Award.

Mr. Sternlicht is a trustee of his alma mater, Brown University. He is also on the Board of Directors of The Estée Lauder Companies, the Pension Real Estate Association (PREA) and the Real Estate Roundtable. Additionally, he serves as Chairman of the Board of The Robin Hood Foundation, and is on the board of the Dreamland Film & Performing Arts Center and the Executive Advisory Board of Americans for the Arts. He is a member of the World Presidents Organization and the Urban Land Institute.

Barry Sternlicht received his BA, magna cum laude, with honors from Brown University. He later earned an MBA with distinction from Harvard Business School.

Bradford T. Nordholm, Senior Managing Director & Co-Head

Mr. Nordholm is a Senior Managing Director & Co-Head of Starwood Energy and is responsible for leadership of the Firm including strategic direction, tactical execution, organizational development and investor relations. Mr. Nordholm also serves as a director of Starwood Energy’s portfolio companies and as a member of its Investment Committee. Since joining Starwood Energy as its first CEO in 2006, Mr. Nordholm has overseen the completion of approximately two-dozen highly structured investments in power generation and transmission projects in North America, with aggregate enterprise value of approximately $4 billion.

Prior to joining Starwood Energy in 2006, Mr. Nordholm was Co-Founder and CEO of Tyr Energy, Inc., an asset management firm with responsibility for power generation assets valued at more than $5 billion, and, concurrently, was Co-Founder and Chairman of Tyr Capital, LLC, a private equity investment fund. Before that, Mr. Nordholm served as General Manager of Aquila, Inc, where he was responsible for the development, acquisition, management and optimization of power generation, gas storage and gas transportation assets with aggregate enterprise value of approximately $3.5 billion, and as CEO of U.S. Central, a $36 billion asset wholesale financial services company.

Mr. Nordholm received a B.A. degree in economics from Carleton College, where he currently serves as a Trustee, and completed the Program for Management Development at Harvard Business School.

Himanshu Saxena, Senior Managing Director & Co-Head

Himanshu Saxena is a Senior Managing Director & Co-Head of Starwood Energy and is responsible for supervision of the Firm’s investment program and strategy, as well as overall management of the Firm. Mr. Saxena sits on both the Investment Committee and the boards of portfolio companies. Mr. Saxena is also responsible for the development and management of the investment team. In addition, he maintains responsibilities for origination, structuring, execution, monitoring and exiting investments across the energy industry. Mr. Saxena has led the acquisition and development of approximately 4,500 MW of power generation and transmission projects in North America, with aggregate enterprise value of approximately $5 billion.

Prior to joining Starwood Energy in 2008, Mr. Saxena was an investment banker with JPMorgan’s global energy and utilities group, where he advised on more than $10 billion in transactions. Before that, Mr. Saxena worked at American Electric Power, where he focused on managing financial risks in the power trading business and on optimizing a power generation portfolio. Mr. Saxena was previously a Chemical Engineer at industrial gas company Praxair, where he filed for several patents.

Mr. Saxena currently serves on the Advisory Board at Cornell University’s Program in Infrastructure Policy (CPIP).

Mr. Saxena earned an MBA from Duke University, where he was a Fuqua Scholar, an M.S. in chemical engineering from Cornell University, and a Bachelor’s of Technology in chemical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology (“IIT”) in Bombay, India.

Madison F. Grose, Vice Chairman, General Counsel and Senior Managing Director

Madison WebsiteMr. Grose is Co-General Counsel and a Senior Managing Director of Starwood Capital, and is also the Vice Chairman, General Counsel and a Senior Managing Director of Starwood Energy, where he currently focuses most of his time. Mr. Grose previously served as a Trustee or Director of Starwood Hotels from 1994 until 2001, and as a Director of iStar Financial, Inc., from 1999 until 2003.

Mr. Grose led the structuring and underwriting for Starwood Energy’s first investment, Neptune, a 660 MW undersea power cable completed on time and under budget, which now connects the New Jersey and Long Island, New York power grids, providing upwards of 20% of Long Island’s power.

Prior to joining Starwood Capital in 1992, Mr. Grose was a Senior and Founding Partner with Pircher, Nichols & Meeks, a law firm specializing in complex real estate-related transactions.

Mr. Grose holds a B.A with distinction and highest departmental honors from Stanford University and a J.D. from UCLA School of Law, where he served as the Chief Comment Editor of the UCLA Law Review.


Jeffrey Delgado, Senior Vice President

In addition, Mr. Delgado supports acquisition, development and construction activities. Mr. Delgado has over 23 years of experience in operations and management of power and transmission projects.

Prior to joining Starwood Energy Group in 2015, Mr. Delgado was Director of Business Management with Caithness Energy where he was responsible for asset management and operations oversight of sixteen projects totaling over $3B.  Mr. Delgado began his career at Con Edison where he held various operating positions at the utility’s power generation and substation facilities, and asset management and operations responsibility for its unregulated subsidiary’s PJM assets.

Mr. Delgado holds a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Polytechnic University and a Master of Business Administration degree in Finance and Investments from Baruch College’s Zicklin School of Business.

Ali Amirali, Senior Vice President

Ali Amirali is a Senior Vice President of Starwood Energy Group. In this role, Mr. Amirali is responsible for the expansion of Starwood Energy Group’s StarTrans high-voltage transmission assets, as well as for new business/project opportunities in the transmission and distribution arena in North America. He also supports the origination, development and acquisition activities associated with utility-scale power generation and storage projects.

Prior to joining Starwood Energy Group in 2010, Mr. Amirali held a variety of key technical and leadership positions at Element Power, LS Power, Calpine Corp., California Independent Systems Operator and Pacific Gas and Electric Company.  He has participated in the development and interconnection of more than 5,000 megawatts of electric generation in the Western U.S. and Mexico, and has developed and managed several large transmission line projects designed to improve reliability, reduce congestion, and deliver energy from thermal and renewable resources. Mr. Amirali received a B.S. degree in electrical engineering from the Iowa State University, an M.S. in electrical engineering from University of Idaho, a Master’s of Engineering in engineering management from the University of Colorado, and an MBA from Colorado State University. He is also a licensed Professional Engineer registered in the state of California.

Patrick Verdonck, Principal

Patrick Verdonck is a Principal of Starwood Energy Group. In this role, Mr. Verdonck is responsible for making principal investments in the power sector. He was actively involved in the acquisition of Quail Run and Berlin Station. He has an observer role on the board of Nautilus Solar Energy and has worked on several  transmission development projects. Prior to joining Starwood, Mr. Verdonck was an investment banker in  Citigroup’s London-based Energy Power and Chemicals team where he worked on M&A and financing transactions throughout Europe as well as the Middle-East and South Asia. Prior to Citigroup, Mr. Verdonck was a corporate strategy analyst in the Bangkok office of Tractebel EGI (now GDF Suez), one of the largest utilities in the world.

Alex Daberko, Principal

Alex Daberko is a Principal of Starwood Energy Group. In this role, Mr. Daberko has played an active role in many of the firm’s M&A and development transactions Including Thermo Ft. Lupton, Starwood Power-Midway, the Starwood SSM projects, Gainesville Renewable Energy Center, Richland-Stryker, and the Hudson   Transmission Project. Mr. Daberko has acted as asset manager for Starwood’s gas-fired generation fleet, leading the sales of Starwood Power-Midway to Carlyle and Thermo Ft. Lupton to Tri-State Generation and Transmission Association.

David Arbia, Chief Financial Officer

Prior to joining Starwood Energy in 2013, Mr. Arbia served as the Controller of Credit Suisse USA subsidiary Asset Management Finance LLC, where he oversaw an investment portfolio consisting of $700 million in assets. Before that, Mr. Arbia was an Audit Manager in the financial services division at Deloitte & Touche LLP.

Martha Kammoun, Deputy General Counsel

Martha Kammoun is the Deputy General Counsel of Starwood Energy Group. In this role, Ms. Kammoun advises on the legal aspects of the firm’s business, including acquisitions, financing, asset management, and strategic planning.

Prior to joining Starwood Energy Group in 2015, Ms. Kammoun was a member of both the project development and real estate and mergers and acquisitions groups at O’Melveny & Myers LLP in New York, where her practice focused on financing transactions and private M&A deals primarily in the energy and infrastructure sectors. She was previously an associate with Dewey & LeBoeuf LLP in New York.

Anik Gandhi, Vice President

Rich Weiss, Senior Advisor and Project Manager

He is currently a Partner of Optimal Results, L.L.C., which is a Houston based consulting firm of experienced industry professionals who support the fossil and renewable power industry. Optimal Results advises Starwood Energy with respect to project management, project development, asset valuation,  contractual arrangements, operating costs, management expertise, and bidding into RFO’s.

Mr. Weiss has been involved in the power industry since 1972. He held management positions at the Public Service Electric and Gas Company (PSEG). In 1986 he joined the newly created independent power developer, Community Energy Alternatives Inc. (CEA), now PSEG Global, the unregulated power affiliate of PSEG, as Senior Vice President of Business Operations and Engineering. While at CEA, Mr. Weiss created and was responsible for a technical, operations and asset management organization, and personally participated in all project phases, development, execution, and ongoing management, for over twenty successful domestic and international power projects. Starting in 1998, he held the position of Senior Vice President, Engineering and Operations for El Paso Energy International Company, a business unit of El Paso Energy Corporation. He was  responsible for engineering, asset evaluation, plant design, construction, plant operations and daily global management of all El Paso Energy’s power assets developing El Paso into a world-class power plant operator.

Mr. Weiss holds a B.E. from the University of Rhode Island and a Master’s Degree in Engineering Management from Drexel university.

Daniel Sack, Senior Portfolio Accountant 

Daniel Sack is a Senior Portfolio Accountant at Starwood Energy Group. In this role, Mr. Sack supports the business’ financial reporting, tax compliance and cash management efforts.

Prior to joining Starwood Energy in 2015, Mr. Sack worked in the private equity fund accounting group at First Reserve Corp., where he was responsible for financial and tax reporting for several alternative investment vehicles. Before that, he served on the private equity partnership tax team at PricewaterhouseCoopers. Mr. Sack began his career in the portfolio management group at Alliance Bernstein L.P.
